How the Great Firewall discovers hidden circumvention servers

Several years ago, the Great Firewall of China was silently upgraded to find and block circumvention servers that employ encryption to defeat deep packet inspection. The system is now used to block protocols such as Tor, SoftEther, and SSH. In this talk, we will give an overview of how this system works, and how it can be circumvented.

The GFW’s reactive probing system scans egress network traffic for circumvention protocol signatures, and then launches short-lived probes to verify if the suspected server is, in fact, speaking the circumvention protocol. If that is the case, the GFW adds the IP address and port of the server to a country-wide blacklist, preventing people in China from connecting to it. We recently finished a multi-month research project in which we looked at the system from different angles to answer several open questions. In particular, we will talk about:

Pax Americana and the Weaponization of Space #PAXAMERICANA

Actualizado el 7 de feb. de 2012…

The prospect of Earth being ruled from space is no longer science-fiction. The dream of the original Dr. Strangelove, Wernher von Braun (from Nazi rocket-scientist to NASA director) has survived every US administration since WW2 and is coming to life. Today the technology exists to weaponize space, a massive American industry thrives, and nations are maneuvering for advantage.

PAX AMERICANA tackles this pivotal moment. Are war machines already orbiting Earth? Can treaties keep space weapons-free? Must the World capitulate to one super-cop on the global beat?

With startling archival footage and unprecedented access to US Air Force Space Command, this elegant, forceful documentary reveals the state of play through generals, space-policy analysts, politicians, diplomats, peace activists, and hawks.

As if there weren’t enough weapons here on earth, space has become the newest arena for countries around the globe to launch their struggle for supremacy. Denis Delestrac’s film Pax Americana and the Weaponization of Space is packed full of some truly startling facts — everything from the “Rods of God” (space weapons that can launch from orbit) to the fact that fifty cents of every American tax dollar goes towards military spending. The astronomical costs of arming and policing the heavens (more than $200 billion) has largely fallen to the US Air Force, but with China and other nations challenging American supremacy, there is the potential for a war to take place right over our heads.

Comparison of the space race to the sea battles of the 18th and 19th Century are apt, since so many global interests are at stake. As per usual, economics are at the heart of the struggle. Noam Chomsky draws analogies between the US weaponization of space to good old-fashioned colonialism in the tradition of empire. In the name of protecting commercial investment, the US has charged itself with being the arbiter of peace in space. But with the weapons industry replacing almost all other manufacturing in America, is this simply a ruse? Many experts unequivocally state that missile defense is the longest running fraud in the history of US defense. That it, in fact, disguises true American intentions to dominate space as a means of dominating the entire globe. (Getting rid of the anti-ballistic missile treaty was one of the first activities undertaken by the Bush Administration.)

If a space war were to happen, the effects could prove catastrophic. Since there is no way to clean up debris and space junk, it stays in orbit, circling the globe at some 14,000 miles per hour. At this speed, even a pea-sized piece of debris has the capacity to destroy whatever is in its path. This includes satellites that regulate most of the world’s information systems (everything from GPS to banking to media). But with China shooting down one of their own aging satellites, the race shows every sign of heating up. This time, the sky may indeed be falling.

Chinese People Worried That The “Cultural Revolution” Is Back

Publicado el 21/09/2013

File:Destroy the old world Cultural Revolution poster.png

Recently, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) media
continuously claimed that it absolutely did not allow
any slandering words to attack the CCP and the regime.

The CCP promotes Marxism ideology again, vowing to use
the pen as weapon and write articles effectively.

Commentators believe that this move precisely shows the true
purpose of the current cracking down of online expressions.
The CCP openly turns to the “left”.
It likely a new “Rectification
Movement” and “Cultural Revolution” will be carried out soon.

On Sept. 16, CCP’s Qiushi magazine published an article
from view of netizens.

It said online expression is like the “cultural revolution’s big-
character posters”, which spread wider, faster and are dangerous.

Researchers of CCP history pointed out that “cultural revolution
big-character posters” can’t compare with online public opinion.

The online public opinion reflects peoples’ minds.

Zhong Weiguang, Germany-based expert on totalitarianism:
“The Red Guard big-character posters were then directly
controlled, influenced and operated by CCP central regime.

Among many posters, a small number reflected peoples’ true
voices, who took the opportunity to complaint about the CCP.

However, today, many online expressions
are peoples’ initiatives and opinions.”
Shi Ping, writer of the article in Qiushi magazine said that
people are always discontent with the regime.
The Internet is full of criticism and negative news.

What people have excessively criticized
about the regime, are not facts

People believe that online negative news is caused by the
regime’s long-term perverse acts.
People have the right to express their anger.

Zhong Weiguang: “If the regime can prove they are right,
they shouldn’t be afraid of people commenting on that issue.
If the CCP had real achievement, it shouldn’t be worried about
the public monitoring them and free expression.
In the West, people live in the standard society and know if a
government had achievement, it will never be afraid of its citizens.
If a government has legitimacy, then it has no fear of being criticized.”

The CCP’s article strongly supports judiciary interpretation
about measures of online expression crimes.

The editor claimed that the Internet legislation is
following the public will.

Online expression must be controlled.

It absolutely can’t ignore the “hostile forces”, which
using the social network to “destroy China”.

Zhong Weiguang: “The CCP has always been under banner
of public opinion against the people.
In China, the regime is a lie producer, including those
who control the internet.
Those lie producers, use lies to rule people.
They know the people need the truth, justice,
freedom of expression, and exposing corruption.”

People’s Daily has published a lengthy article
written by its director, Zhang Yannong.

Zhang cited Lenin’s article of 1905: “Party newspaper is part
of Party’s career, It can’t be push outside of the party for a minute.”

Zhang claimed that the opinion of “People are above the party”
is to deny the CCP’s leadership.
It attempts to get rid of the CCP’s leadership from
the media industry.

Zhong Weiguang: “The one-party dictatorship is above all,
So it definitely can not represent the people.
If CCP represents people, it shouldn’t fear whether people’s
Thoughts are the same or different to that of the party.”

Zhong Weiguang pointed out that the CCP has ruled
China for several decades.
It relies on one-party dictatorship ideology to run the country.
Any thoughts or expression against the CCP will be suppressed.
The CCP has felt great threats, thus the brutal suppression has
increasingly intensified.
Now the CCP promoted Leftist ideology again reflecting its fear.
To maintain its power, the “Cultural Revolution” may occur again.

Dumbass (Explicit Lyrics)

Ai Weiwei

Ai Weiwei

When you’re ready to strike, he mumbles about non-violence.
When you pinch his ear, he says it’s no cure for diarrhea.
You say you’re a mother-fucker, he claims he’s invincible.
You say you’re a mother-fucker, he claims he’s invincible.
Fuck forgiveness, tolerance be damned, to hell with manners, the low-life’s invincible.
Fuck forgiveness, tolerance be damned, to hell with manners, the low-life’s invincible.
Oh dumbass, oh such dumbass! Oh dumbass, oh such dumbass!
Oh dumbass, oh such dumbass! Oh dumbass, oh such dumbass!
Lalalalala, lalalalala Lalalalala, lalalalala
Lalalalala, lalalalala Lalalalala, lalalalala

Stand on the frontline like a dumbass, in a country that puts out like a hooker.
The field’s full of fuckers, dumbasses are everywhere.
The field’s full of fuckers, dumbasses are everywhere.
Fuck forgiveness, tolerance be damned, to hell with manners, the low-life’s invincible.
You say you’re a mother-fucker, he claims he’s invincible.
You say you’re a mother-fucker, he claims he’s invincible.
The field is full of fuckers, dumbasses are everywhere.
The field’s full of fuckers, dumbasses are everywhere.

Born in a cave with only stars to tell time, Gao Zhisheng overcomes incredible odds to become one of China’s top attorneys. The people call him “the Conscience of China”. But then, in the eyes of the Communist Party, his pursuit of justice goes too far.

After speaking out against taboo human rights abuses, Gao is abducted and tortured. Secret police hold his wife and children hostage.

In a heart-wrenching dilemma, Gao is forced to choose between his lifelong quest for justice and his love for his family.

A story of cruelty, courage and compassion, this film is a must-see for anyone wishing to understand the tensions bubbling below the surface of today’s China, or to meet one of the most noble freedom fighters of our time.

Liberation Technology in Authoritarian Regimes

Program on Liberation Technology

This two day conference will examine the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to expand freedom and generate more pluralistic flows of ideas and information in authoritarian contexts. Through presentation of papers and panel sessions, three key themes will be explored:

  • How individuals in authoritarian countries are using liberation technologies (particularly the internet and mobile phones) to expand pluralism and freedom.
  • How authoritarian states are censoring, constraining, monitoring, and punishing the use of ICT for that purpose.
  • How citizens and groups can circumvent authoritarian censorship and control of these technologies.

Discussion will focus on these challenges generally and also specific developments in countries such as China, Iran, Cuba, Burma, and North Korea, as well as Russia and selected Arab authoritarian regimes.

The conference is sponsored by the Program on Liberation Technology at the Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law at Stanford, in cooperation with the Hoover Institution.

Sorry, But That ‘Chinese’ Hacking Report Proves Nothing

Last night security firm Mandiant published what appeared to be the most definitive report linking attacks on US firms and institutions with Chinese hackers based with the military.

It’s a remarkable report, laying bare what most people had long assumed — the Chinese government is directly linked to cyber-espionage attacks.

However, not everyone in the cyber-security world is convinced by the report, nor the New York Times articles and Businessweek cover story that have accompanied it. These experts hit back at any claims of a “smoking gun” in the report, instead arguing that more investigation is needed.

In a blog post today, Jeffrey Carr, founder and CEO of cyber security firm Taia Global inc, wrote that the Mandiant report had “critical analytic flaws” and that other theories had not been fully investigated as they did not fit in with the report’s anti-China bias.

China Suspected of Hacking U.S.

Sophisticated and extensive study on China’s systematic hacking. The report, issued by Mandiant, is pivotal in understanding the lengths and degree to which Chinese hackers are going and how deeply entrenched within the government they are. So far, China denies it all.
